O'Neil was a student in high-school when she auditioned in 2005 for the 3rd Canadian Idol season. She made it to the top ten spots because of the enthusiasm shown by judges for her performances. The performance of O'Neil was highly appreciated by the judge. But, O'Neil suffered a significant drop during the Top 10 as well as the Top 9 final weeks when she was voted for in the bottom 3, bottom 3, and second lowest. The judges were shocked at the result and exhorted the audience to support those with great singing talent, like Melissa. After giving consistently stellar performances throughout the contest, O'Neil never again finished in the bottom three. With two other stunning performances on September 7, 2005, as O'Neil as well as Rex Goudie advanced to the competition's final two competitors, judge Werner reportedly predicted that the headlines in the morning papers would read O'Neil beat Goudie to become the third Canadian Idol, the first female winner and the most youthful winner in the competition's time . O'Neil got a phone call from Canadian prime minister Paul Martin to congratulate her on winning Canadian Idol.
